Light Green Mountain Landscape

‘Light Green Mountain Landscape ‘ Chinese Scroll painted in mineral pigments on silk, Queensland private collection.

Previous surface repairs had failed to hold the weight of this large Chinese scroll painting.  Silk borders had deteriorated and torn, time and age had taken its toll. Pigments appear unsaturated when they have lost their pigment binder.

After consolidating pigments, replacing paper support linings, and infilling losses, the pigments appear saturated and are strongly bound to the silk again. The title of the painting was saved and re-attached to the outer wrap of the scroll.

Creases had formed due to embrittlement of the old paper support layers, and this had caused cracks through the silk painting.

After complete reconstruction of the scroll, they are flattened and strong again. The paradise of a Chinese garden can again be enjoyed unobstructed.
